- The marriage of Henry Vose and Elizabeth Badcock was probably the first one perfdormed by a clergyman in New England. Judge Sewall of Boston, in his Diary thus describes the event: "1686, Tuesday, May 18. A great wedding from Milton, and are married by Mr. Randolph's chaplain (Rev. Ratcliffe who had arrived in Boston on May 13, 1686 from England, the first minister of the English church commissioned to officiate on New England soil. Previous to this, all marriages had been performed by magistrates or some person especially appointed for the purpose. On May 29, 1686 Joseph Dudley, President, issued a proclamation authorizing the clerical function.) at mr. Shrimpton's, according to ye Service Book, a little after noon, when Prayer was had at ye Town House: Was another married at ye same time; the former was Vose's son. Borrowed a ring. [1]
